Down by the Riverside - #510
"Down by the Riverside" (also known as "Ain't Gonna Study War No More") is a traditional gospel song. It has a long history and was known in Civil War times. It was sung by both whites and blacks. The line "I ain't goin' to study war no mo" perhaps originated about this time. Slaves from the American South adopted this song as a work song and added many lines to it from other spirituals. It has endured far into modern times with little changes since. It was first published in Carl Sandburg's "The American Songbag" (1927) and there were at least 14 black gospel recordings before World War II. This fine calligraphic interpretation by Timothy Botts is available as: - 10 X 10 Poster Print on heavyweight matte paper for $17.00. - 12 X 12 Limited Edition, signed and numbered (250) Giclee Print, reproduced on archival paper for $40.00. - NOT available framed or matted.
